Q: What is your Current Role at ONCO?

SD: I am currently the Vice President of Client Services at ONCO. In this role, I coordinate the efforts of our registry support team and work to assure that our client’s issues are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.

Q: How long have you worked at ONCO?

SD: I have worked at ONCO since August 2017. In the time prior to my current role, I have held two other positions with ONCO. First as Senior Client Relationship Manager, followed by Manager of Abstracting Services.

Q: How did you get into this industry?

SD: While I was attending college to obtain my RHIT, we discussed Cancer Registry for less than a half hour in one class. As my sister was going through treatment for metastatic breast cancer at that time it sparked my interest. At the same time, I was working part time as an outpatient coder and my supervisor was also over the cancer registry. Conversations with her convinced me that this was a profession that I wanted to explore as I like detailed work and wanted to better understand what my sister was going through. Around the time that I graduated, a near by facility posted a registry clerk position – and I interviewed and was offered the position. I have never regretted that decision. I love being in a profession that is both challenging and rewarding. It has provided me the opportunity to learn new things daily and to make a difference in the lives of current and future cancer patients.

Q: What were your previous roles and experiences?

SD: I joined the cancer registry profession in the mid 80’s as a clerk where my job included follow-up and cancer conferences. I remember completing follow-up using paper tickler files and using a protractor and colored pencils to make graphs for annual reports. I have started a new registry, worked in small facilities with medical staff of less than 50 and large teaching institutions. I have worked at a state registry and as an independent contractor. My experience includes both single and multifacility systems and consulting in Saudi Arabia. I have held registry positions from clerk to program manager.

Q: Why did you choose to work at ONCO?

SD: Coming to work for ONCO provided me the opportunity to continue to grow professionally in a new direction. Since I begin using ONCOLog, I have felt it to be superior to the other registry software applications that I have used over my 30+ years of working in hospital registries. It’s flexibility allows customization to meet individual facility needs. The support team is second to none. ONCO is a family of dedicated professional who work each day to assist registrars in the collection of the data needed to advance treatments and care of cancer patients. We value feedback from our clients and many of our best enhancements have come about due to client suggestions. I am very proud to be a part of this team.

Q: On a personal note, what are your favorite hobbies?

SD: For many years, I have made homemade Christmas decorations for my friends and family. This has included light block presents, wreaths, paintbrush Santa’s, lightbulb penguins and reindeer, cinderblock and sock snowmen and many others. I also enjoy crocheting and cross stitch. In the summer and fall, my husband and I can many vegetables and fruits – some of which we grow in our own garden.
